Uniting Communities to Conquer Breast Cancer!
by the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate encourages you to become more intricately AWARE of the movement taking breast cancer by storm… right in your own backyard. Doing so can help you better understand the support services available to you, as well as serve as a power-base for you to assure your loved ones and neighbors have the knowledge to protect themselves against the disease that strikes one in every eight women.
“People hear ‘Komen Philadelphia Affiliate’ and think two things: we serve the city of Philadelphia, and we support breast cancer research. While those thoughts are true… it is far from the WHOLE truth, and we need people to know the full depth of why we are here and what we do, because that is the knowledge that will save lives today, and for generations to come,” said Elaine I. Grobman, Chief Executive Officer, Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. “In addition to our own initiatives for education, support and access to care… we have a team of over 40 grantees working every day in fifteen counties to fulfill our promise that NO woman will ever be alone in the fight against breast cancer.”
Every year, The Affiliate’s Community Grants Program distributes over $2 million. The 40+ grantees represent some of the finest healthcare, community and family service organizations in The Affiliate’s fifteen-county service area, and offer broad outreach in terms of ethnicity, income level, age and lifestyle. In the past 22 years, The Affiliate has distributed more than $49 million in local grants to support breast health education, awareness, screening, treatment and support projects specifically targeting low-income, uninsured women. In that time span, they’ve also funded approximately 110,000 mammograms and contributed $17 million to research.
“We share these numbers not to pat ourselves on the back, but to emphasize the force at work and available to all women. This fight is far from over… 1,252 women still die every day from this disease. We need to continue to unite and conquer; and this Affiliate is dedicated to leading the way until no life is threatened by breast cancer.”
