Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage confidence and character who make the world a better place.
One of the leadership programs we offer is the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program (GSBB) for girls whose mothers are incarcerated. GSBB is helping girls rediscover the sense of safety and stability they require through 3 key strategies:
- Providing girls with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE);
- Building strong, deep relationships between the GSBB leadership and girls and their families/caregivers; and
- Facilitating in-prison visits for girls and their mothers and parental counseling for mothers.
Part of the program brings girls to the Girl Scouts Shelly Ridge location in the woods of Miquon, PA, at which there is a beautiful lodge with a balcony meeting space. The furniture and resources from Ikea would make this space extra special for our GSBB girls when they are at Shelly Ridge, creating an environment that is comfortable, and encourages their own creativity.
