Bethenny Frankel’s Truths

Many of us think of Bethenny Frankel as the fast-talking, forthright reality TV star with brains and balls to spare. After all, not only did she seize the marketing opportunities of her fame and time on TV, selling books and Skinnybrand cocktails, she then sold the Skinnygirl Margarita brand for a reported $120 million—and kept the licensing rights to the Skinnygirl brand, which she has built into an empire.

Yet in the past several months, an additional aspect of Frankel has come to national light: her extraordinary humanitarianism. Last September, on her own dime, she helicoptered to a rural town in Mexico to raise awareness of the earthquake’s devastation there. Then she went to post-Harvey Houston and delivered $300,000 worth of relief supplies, which had been raised by her organization B Strong, an initiative through Dress for Success. And then she became a one-woman rescue mission to Puerto Rico, first chartering planes to deliver relief supplies and bring back elderly and ailing citizens and then arranging for a cargo ship that can carry 15 million pounds of generators, food and other necessities. Shonda Rhimes on Grit, Success and Her Latest Project

With three TV series returning this season (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder”) and two debuting (“For the People” and a to-be-named “Grey’s” spinoff about firefighters), Shonda Rhimes is a busy woman. Summer was no exception, since the shows resumed production in July. Still, Shondaland’s chief storyteller (that’s her official title at the production company) added a new project to her plate: Shondaland.com, the website.

“It’s been a whole other outlet, which has been great,” says Rhimes, who interviewed straight-talking Rep. Maxine Waters, among others, for the site. The prolific TV hit-maker plans on contributing frequently: “I’m going to write about what’s going on, things I’m interested in, what I’m thinking about.” Though she wants it to be clear that she won’t be the only writer. “We’re going to have a lot of different voices and stories,” she says. “As we’ve been telling people, the site is about life, not lifestyle—covering politics, culture, news and other issues important to women as well as telling women’s stories.” Read More

Anita Hill

It’s been 26 years since Anita Hill raised awareness of sexual harassment with her televised testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary committee. Kara Swisher on Taking Risks and Having No Regrets

Kara SwisherIf there’s one thing you notice right off the bat about Kara Swisher, it’s that the executive editor of Recode does not mince words. It could be because she doesn’t have time to run circles around her meaning, but the more she speaks her mind, the more you realize that the tech journalist is simply a straight shooter.

Yet Swisher is as insightful as she is direct, and the combo makes her bore-proof. See (or read) for yourself: here, she shares what she has learned on her journey from being a corporate employee to startup founder and owner.
